Katon-Karagaysky district

Katon-Karagay district was established on January 17, 1928 from parts of Katon-Karagay, Pozdnyakov volosts of Buckhtarma uyezd and a part of Pogranichnaya volost of Zaisan uyezd. In 1997 territory of the abolished Bolshenarym district became a part of the district, village Bolshenarym became a centre. In 2009 village Bolshenarym was renamed into Ulken Naryn. The name of the district derived from the name of the former administrative centre Katon-Karagay (1871). You can find information about toponym formation in A. Islyamov’s book “Toponymy of East Kazakhstan”: “A deep pine forest was situated near Katon-Karagay village (pine in the Kazakh language is karagay). That district was called Katon both in Kazakh and Kalmyk. So that what the name Katon-Karagay appeared”. The encyclopedic book “Toponymy of Kazakhstan” gives the following information: “It got the modern name after it was united with the village Altay (1871) which means a place surrounded by pine forest”. Peculiar brands of the economy of the district and East Kazakhstan are bee breeding, maral (deer) breeding and tourism. All these unique and promising economic sectors of Katon-Karagay are interrelated and interdependent. Maral breeding aiming at production of velvet antler originated from Altai.
