There are Western Altai and Markakol parks, Katon-Karagai National Park and Tarbagatai National Nature Park in Eastern Kazakhstan. Over 100 types of medicinal herbs growing and over 70% of the Republic's industrial forest reserves are concentrated there. There are about 489 species of animals and 37 species of fish on the territory of the region. Because of landscape diversity, Kazakh Altai area is one of the 200 priority global ecological regions of the world ranked by WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature).
