The West Altai and Markakol nature reserves, Katon-Karagay national Park, and Tarbagatay national nature Park are located on the territory of East Kazakhstan. They grow more than 100 types of medicinal herbs.
More than 70% of the Republic's industrial forest reserves are concentrated here. The region is home to about 489 species of animals and 37 species of fish.
Due to the landscape diversity, the territory of the Kazakh Altai is included in the 200 priority global ecological regions of the world, defined by the international organization WWF (world wide Fund for nature).
