The Narym River originates at the junction of the Narym and Sarymsakty ridges from a swampy area formed from the runoff of streams. Due to the low upper reaches and flat clay-sandy riverbed, the width of the valley sometimes reaches over 20 km, at places it narrows to 25-250 m, the width of the riverbed is 15-25 m, the depth is from 0.5 to 2.5 m.
A highway runs along the river. Settlements along the river: Zhuldyz, Altynbel, Mayemer, with the village of Ulken Naryn at the mouth.
Since 1960, with the formation of the Bukhtarma reservoir and the flooding of several settlements, the Narym River flows into the Bukhtarma reservoir.
