New Zaysan Airport is 93.7% complete: construction expected to be completed by the end of 2026

Construction of the new Zaysan Airport is ongoing near the village of Satpay. As of today, the facility is 93.7% construction-ready, with the project now at its final stage.

The main works on the airfield infrastructure have already been completed. These include the construction of the runway, apron and taxiway, perimeter and access roads, installation of the DVOR radio beacon, drainage systems, external communication and power supply networks, as well as airfield lighting equipment.

Work is currently continuing on individual facilities within the airport complex, including the passenger terminal and buildings and structures of the engineering and emergency rescue infrastructure. The installation of certain types of equipment and landscaping works are also underway.

Construction of the airport is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

Following the commissioning of the facility, the airport will have 126 staff positions. Most of the workforce is planned to be provided by the existing personnel of Zaysan Airport, who will be transferred to the new facility in accordance with their job responsibilities and qualification requirements.

To train qualified specialists, training and internships for potential employees have already been organized at Ust-Kamenogorsk Airport JSC. The training is being conducted in accordance with the established professional training requirements for airport personnel.

New air routes

Negotiations with airlines are currently underway to develop the route network of the new airport. At the initial stage, the launch of domestic flights connecting Zaysan with Ust-Kamenogorsk, Almaty and Astana is being considered.

The possibility of opening international routes to China — Urumqi, Altai and Kanas — is also being explored.

New airport infrastructure

The project provides for the development of modern airport infrastructure, including a passenger terminal, aviation security services, emergency and rescue units, as well as meteorological, communications, power supply and drainage systems.

The airfield has a 2,200-metre runway designed to accommodate Bombardier Q400 and ATR-72 aircraft. The project also includes an apron for four aircraft and a passenger terminal with an area of up to 4,000 square metres, with a capacity of up to 150 passengers per hour.

The new airport will become an important element of the transport infrastructure of Zaysan District, expand opportunities for domestic and international tourism, and improve transport accessibility to one of the most promising tourist destinations in East Kazakhstan.
