Kalbatau is the administrative center of Zharma District. It is located approximately 48 km southeast of Charsk and 105 km southwest of Ust-Kamenogorsk. The nearest railway station is Zhangiztobe, 35 km away. The village was founded in 1893 by immigrants from the Tavrichesky province on the place of the ancient Kazakh aul. Semey-zaisan and Almaty – Ust-Kamenogorsk state highways pass through Kalbatau.
