Berel burial mounds is unique archaeological monument of the 1st millennium BC, with more than 100 funerary-memorial structures. Unique items of the nomadic elite of the scytho-saka period (IV century BC) were found in them, preserved thanks to the phenomenon of "Frozen graves". The finds, including organic material, clothing, and utensils, have been preserved in excellent condition due to the fact that the ancients, probably taking into account the natural and climatic conditions of the area, built such structures that created artificial permafrost. Berel mounds gained their popularity thanks to the ancient royal tombs. That's why this place is called the Valley of Kings. The fragments of clothing which remained of the buried were embroidered with beads and decorated with thousands of plates of pure gold in the form of tiny figures of animals.
At the hands of scientists turned out to be invaluable information which will give an opportunity to learn more about the culture, crafts and history of the nomads. In addition, genetic analysis of tissues will allow us to reconstruct the image of people and animals of a distant era. Many artifacts of the Berel mounds have become exhibits not only in Kazakhstan's museums, but also in the world-famous Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
